Welcome to Mrs. Harris' Counseling Information Website
Welcome to Harbor Lights Middle School. My name is Mrs. Harris. This will be my 9th year at Harbor Lights. Prior to working at the middle school level, I was an elementary school counselor at Great Lakes Elementary School. Before moving to Holland, I was a school counselor at the elementary and middle school levels on the east side of the state in a small town called Romeo, Mi. This is my 14th year as a school counselor. I received my college degrees from Western Michigan University and Oakland University. I am a licensed school counselor, a state Licensed Professional Counselor as well as a Nationally Certified Counselor. I enjoy taking classes and learning new ways to work with students and their families. I have two young sons and live in Hamilton, out in the country :) In my spare time I like to read, garden and play with my kids.
At each grade level, the counselor goes into the classroom and provides large group guidance lessons on specific topics. In 6th grade the focus is on transitioning to the middle level, study habits and anti-bullying strategies. In 7th grade the focus is on career and college exploration and preparation with targeted lessons on sexual harassment and anti-bullying. Additionally, the 7th grade students have the Career Symposium career event exposing them to 4 different career paths they might want to explore. In 8th grade the focus is on readying students for the transition to the high school level, more intensive career and college planning, developmentally appropriate lessons on sexual harassment and anti-bullying. The 8th grade students visit Hope College for a visit to learn about the types of classes and opportunities at the college level.
The counselor provides, brief individual counseling with a focus on short-term interventions. Appropriate referrals to outside agencies are made when the situation is deemed in need of further counseling services. The counselor provides in-school small groups on topics ranging from study habits, friendship problems, grief support and family changes. The counselor works with students to solve problems that arise within the school day such as a friendship concern, classroom behavior or conflicts. Students may refer themselves, be parent referred or teachers and administration may make counseling referrals. Counselors work closely with parents, teachers and principals to ensure that the middle school years though full of physical and emotional changes are positive and rewarding!
